Objectives: -Take photos inspired by your list -Edit photos by combining parts or whole photos in photoshop
Research:
My thinking behind this research and these photo choices was finding artists that took pictures of zippers up close but still had a clear and focused image. Even though the images look basic, what I found most useful was how each photo was taken from a different angle of the zipper and gave you a different perspective of it.
My 20 NEW Photos:
Most of my photos expect for a few were taken at the school. I found it difficult to find a zipper that was not plain like on a backpack or jacket but that is what I had to result to. So, in order to make sure all the photos did not look the same or very similar, I tried different angle, opening the zipper, putting stuff behind the zipper as if it was coming out of the pocket, etc. The photos I took at home were a bit easier and I used the same bag but just opened it, closed it, and included my hand in the photo. I enjoyed this shoot because it gave me a challenge but I am proud of the outcome.
My 4 Edited Photos:
With my edited photos I just overlapped two of my photos for each and blended them. On some of them I played with the brightness and the contrast. On others I messed with the black and white adjustment and the levels. I found it easier to just combine photos instead of trying too take a zipper out of one photo and put it in another. Overall, I think my edited photos came out good even if I did not do any crazy editing.

5 Step Critique:
DESCRIBE: This is a photography done on lustre paper. It is black and white and that was done by adjusting the color balance in the photo and turning down the intensity of the colors. The subject matter is of two zippers and the top of my thumb. In order to arrange this piece the way I did I overlapped two of my raw images and lowered the opacity of the top one. In the top right of the photo you can see my thumb and finger pulling a zipper and the faint shape of zipper teeth on top of it. In the top middle of the photo is where one of the zippers was open and when I adjusted the colors it made the opening of the zipper lighter and almost a very light grey. On the bottom/middle of the photo you can see another zipper on the black bag that is partially open.
ANALYZE: In this photo the value creates balance. This is happening all throughout the image but some main areas are the opening of the zipper with the lighter shade and the actual zipper which is black. This is also happening with the overlapping of the photos where you can see the lighter bag behind the dark bag in front and it all evens out because this is not happening in just one area. This is important to the photo because it's not all the time when you can have so much white or so much black in a photo that is seems balanced so in this photo even though its black and white there is a fair and even amount of lights and darks. Also in this photo, the texture creates a pattern. This is happening in the middle of the photo where near the top you can see the zipper teeth, then just below it you can see another zipper and even though its not open its a pattern even if the teeth of the zippers are not the same size. This is important in the photo because you can see how the patterns of the texture stand out in the photo and lead your eye to those points then travels throughout the rest of the image.
INTERPRET: The idea of this photograph is to create the illusion that the thumb is opening the main zipper in the picture. Although it may look as if it is one photo it is two photos over lapped that makes the viewers eye look twice. The theme of this piece could be look carefully before judging . I believe this theme would fit because a viewer would take a glimpse at the photo and think it’s just a raw photo with a filter over it but once you look closer you can break down the image to figure out what’s going on.
