The Critique:
Describe: This is a photo. The subject matter of this piece is my three dogs all edited to overlap. On the left of the photo is my dog Hailey and her head is partially tilted. In the middle of the photo is my darkest dog Beto, and on the right of the photo is my dog Reese. The photo was printed on lustre paper and matted with a white border. This photo was made by putting each photo as a layer and adjusting the opacity on the two top layer so you can see all three dogs. After that I edited the photo as a whole, made it black and white, adjusted the exposure, and adjusted the levels so the different colors on the dogs are visible even if it is three photos combined you can still evenly see all three dogs.
Analyze: In this photo the value creates balance. This connection is happening mostly on the left and right sides of the piece because as you can see the dog in the middle has no white on him so when the dogs overlap in those areas the darkness of the middle dog is balance out the the white on the left and right dogs faces. It is being used to make each of the dogs face's to stand out. This is important because a photo or any piece of art needs to have some type of balance even if it is in black and white. It is also important because you need to be able to show these types of things in your work and have it identified before it is even done. In the photo line creates repetition. Obviously all dogs have a similar nose but in this piece all the dogs noses are almost lined up near the middle of the photo. This is being used to create the illusion that all the dogs could be lined up. Repetition can be important in this piece is shows the definition that there is three dogs and even if that is hard to identify it can be easier by just locating the noses.
Interpret: The idea of this piece was to include all three of my dogs in one edit and not just cutting and pasting them all into one photo. The evidence in the entire piece and I tried as hard as I could to make sure the opacity level was even on each layer or at least to where the dogs did not start to combined to where you couldn't see one part of a dog. I did not mess with individual layers I felt it would be easier to even out the black and white by editing the photo as a whole. The mood of this piece can be calm. I think this is the mood because usually when you see pictures of dogs they are running around and energetic and I managed to make my dogs sit still long enough to let a straight and clear image of them. The evidence for this mood is shown in the piece because you can tell all three dogs are still and looking right at the camera.
Evaluate: In my opinion this piece was successful because of the compostition and editing of the photo as a whole. The photo does not look just like a raw photo that I added a filter to. It is obvious that I edited and combined the photos to the best of my ability to make sure all three dogs are visible. This piece could have been better if I spent some more time with adjusting the black and white and levels to really create balance with the lights and darks. Overall, I think for the first project my work was successful.
